MPU due to criminal offenses
Criminal offenses can lead to an MPU order. Learn about the background and the proper preparation for an MPU due to criminal law issues.
When is an MPU ordered due to criminal offenses?
An MPU in connection with criminal offenses is ordered when the driver's license authority has doubts about driving fitness due to criminal convictions. This particularly applies to offenses related to road traffic or those indicating a fundamental fitness problem.
Typical reasons include: offenses committed under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hit-and-run, driving without a valid license, serious traffic offenses resulting in personal injury, or repeated criminal acts indicating a lack of self-control.
Criminal offenses outside of road traffic can also lead to an MPU if they suggest personality traits that call driving fitness into question. These include, for example, violent offenses, property crimes with an aggressive character, or drug-related offenses.
Processing the criminal offense
The central question in an MPU due to criminal offenses is: Have you processed the offense and are you able to avoid such behavior in the future? The assessor wants to see a comprehensible development.
During preparation, we work together on the background of the offense: What life circumstances contributed to it? What patterns were at play? What have you learned from the experience? What concrete measures have you taken to prevent a recurrence?
Taking responsibility is particularly important. Those who blame others or downplay the offense will score poorly in the assessment. The assessor expects an honest, differentiated examination of one's own actions.
Probation and MPU
Many affected individuals are on probation at the time of the MPU. Successful probation can be viewed as a positive signal, but it alone is not sufficient. The assessor wants to see a profound behavioral change beyond mere compliance with the law.
If you are on probation, probation conditions such as therapy, community service, or regular meetings with a probation officer can be positively incorporated into MPU preparation. Document all measures carefully.
If therapy was ordered as a probation condition, bring the corresponding certificates and reports to the MPU. These show the assessor that you are actively working on your change.
