MPU due to medication

Prescription medication can impair driving fitness. Learn when an MPU due to medication misuse is ordered and how to prepare.

When is a medication MPU ordered?

An MPU due to medication misuse is ordered when the driver's license authority has evidence that prescription medications are impairing driving fitness. This can be triggered by a traffic stop, an accident, or reports from third parties.

Particularly affected are individuals who take benzodiazepines (sedatives), opioids (painkillers), stimulants, or other psychoactive medications. The decisive factor is not the medical prescription itself, but whether the medication impairs driving ability or whether misuse is present.

An overdose, taking medication without a prescription, or combining it with alcohol can also lead to an MPU order. The line between medically necessary use and misuse is often blurred.

Recognizing and addressing medication misuse

For the MPU preparation, it is important to honestly reflect on your own medication use. Often, dependency develops gradually: what began as a prescribed treatment can evolve over time into habituation or addiction.

Typical signs include taking higher doses than prescribed, obtaining prescriptions from multiple doctors, taking medication without current medical necessity, or feeling unable to function without the medication.

During preparation, we work together on your medication biography and develop strategies for responsible medication management. If needed, we also support you in finding alternative treatment methods in consultation with your treating physician.

Medical documentation and expert reports

For a medication MPU, thorough medical documentation is particularly important. The assessor wants to see that you manage your medication responsibly and understand its effects on driving fitness.

A medical certificate describing the current medication, dosage, and effects on driving fitness can positively influence the assessment. In some cases, a specialist medical report may also be obtained.

We help you compile the necessary documents and advise you on which medical statements are appropriate for your MPU.
