MPU due to drugs

An MPU due to drugs requires special preparation. Learn everything about abstinence documentation, hair analyses, urine screenings, and the optimal preparation for your drug MPU.

When is a drug MPU ordered?

A drug MPU is ordered when the use of illegal substances has been detected in connection with road traffic. Unlike alcohol, there is no tolerance threshold for illegal drugs: even a single detection can lead to an MPU order.

Possession of controlled substances without direct traffic participation can also lead to an MPU order if the driver's license authority has doubts about driving fitness. Particularly strict measures are applied for hard drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines, or opiates.

The legal situation for cannabis has changed with partial legalization. Nevertheless, a THC threshold applies in road traffic, and exceeding it can have consequences. The driver's license authority also examines whether a regular consumption pattern exists.

Abstinence documentation for the drug MPU

For a drug MPU, complete drug abstinence for at least 12 months must generally be demonstrated. For cannabis, an abstinence period of 6 months may be sufficient under certain circumstances.

Abstinence documentation is provided through urine screenings or hair analyses. For urine screenings, at least 6 randomized checks are conducted over the documentation period. Hair analysis can detect consumption over several months and is increasingly accepted as an alternative documentation method.

Important: The abstinence documentation must be conducted by a forensically accredited laboratory. We help you select the right laboratory and guide you through the entire abstinence process.

The psychological interview in the drug MPU

The psychological interview in the drug MPU focuses on the drug biography: When did you start, why did you use, what function did drugs serve in your life, and what has changed since then?

The assessor wants to verify that you have understood the connection between your drug use and traffic participation. They examine whether you have developed stable alternatives to drug use and whether your social environment supports a drug-free lifestyle.

Typical questions concern the consumption history, the ability to separate consumption from driving, the social environment, stress coping strategies, and concrete changes in daily life. Thorough preparation for these questions is crucial for success.

Drug screening: THC, amphetamines, and other substances

For the drug MPU, various substance groups are routinely tested: THC (cannabis), amphetamines, methamphetamine, cocaine, opiates, benzodiazepines, and synthetic cannabinoids.

Detection times vary considerably depending on the substance and test method. THC can be detected in urine for up to 30 days with regular use, and in hair analysis for even several months. Cocaine is detectable in urine for approximately 3–4 days, and significantly longer in hair.

The laboratory results are closely analyzed by the assessors. Even the smallest abnormalities can negatively affect the assessment. Therefore, it is important to maintain abstinence consistently and to inform yourself early about the exact detection times of the consumed substances.
