Requirements vary depending on the offense and your history. Here are the most common scenarios:
MPU due to alcohol
For alcohol-related traffic offenses, addressing your drinking behavior is almost always expected. An MPU is typically mandatory at 1.6 per mille BAC or for repeat offenses.
MPU due to drugs
For drug-related offenses involving your driver's license, abstinence is usually required. Cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine, and other substances are evaluated differently.
MPU due to medication

Abstinence verification: How does it work?
When abstinence is required, you need to prove it over a specific period. There are two recognized methods. Both are conducted by certified laboratories.
Urine screening (EtG)
Regular urine samples taken on short notice and unannounced. Detects alcohol consumption within the last 3 to 4 days.
Hair analysis (EtG)
Analysis of a hair sample that covers consumption over several months. Each centimeter of hair length represents one month.
How long must abstinence be verified?
For alcohol (first offense, lower BAC) and cannabis
For higher BAC, repeat offenses, hard drugs
For severe dependency or multiple relapses
