Addiction Counseling & MPU

Addiction Counseling for the MPU in Frankfurt

Losing your license due to alcohol or drugs is a major turning point for many people. We help you work through the situation and go into the MPU well prepared. Personal, confidential, and with a clear plan.

Basics

What is addiction counseling in the MPU context?

Addiction counseling for the MPU is not therapy. The goal is to systematically address your consumption behavior and show the examiner that you understand the underlying causes and have made lasting changes. This is quite different from general addiction counseling offered by organizations like Caritas or Diakonie.

In MPU-specific addiction counseling, we work together on the questions the examiner will ask: Why did the incident happen? What have you changed since then? How do you make sure it won't happen again? We prepare you to answer these questions honestly and convincingly.

Whether you need addiction counseling and to what extent depends on your specific case. In the free initial consultation, we assess your situation and create a personalized plan. No one-size-fits-all packages, just exactly what you need.

Areas of expertise

When is addiction counseling required for the MPU?

Requirements vary depending on the offense and your history. Here are the most common scenarios:

MPU due to alcohol

For alcohol-related traffic offenses, addressing your drinking behavior is almost always expected. An MPU is typically mandatory at 1.6 per mille BAC or for repeat offenses.

BAC of 1.6 per mille or higher in traffic
Repeated offenses starting at 0.5 per mille
Drunk driving involving an accident or criminal offense

MPU due to drugs

For drug-related offenses involving your driver's license, abstinence is usually required. Cannabis, amphetamines, cocaine, and other substances are evaluated differently.

Any drug use while driving
Drug possession related to your driver's license
Mixed consumption of alcohol and drugs

MPU due to medication

If medication misuse affects your fitness to drive, an MPU may be ordered. This concerns painkillers, benzodiazepines, or other prescription substances.

Misuse of painkillers or sedatives
Driving under the influence of medication
Combined misuse with alcohol

Important decision

Controlled drinking or abstinence?

One of the most important questions in MPU preparation: Do you need to give up alcohol completely, or is it enough to demonstrate responsible consumption? We help you make the right call.

Controlled drinking

You don't give up alcohol entirely but demonstrate that you can handle it responsibly.

BAC below approx. 2.0 per mille at the time of the incident
No indication of alcohol dependency
First-time alcohol offense
Credible demonstration of changed drinking behavior

Complete abstinence

Total avoidance of alcohol with documented proof over a defined period.

BAC above 2.0 per mille or repeat offense
Signs of alcohol dependency
Mandatory for all drug-related offenses
Abstinence verification required for 6 to 15 months

Abstinence verification

Abstinence verification: How does it work?

When abstinence is required, you need to prove it over a specific period. There are two recognized methods. Both are conducted by certified laboratories.

Urine screening (EtG)

Regular urine samples taken on short notice and unannounced. Detects alcohol consumption within the last 3 to 4 days.

4 to 6 screenings during the verification period
Short-notice appointments (24 to 48 hours)
Costs vary depending on the lab and region

Hair analysis (EtG)

Analysis of a hair sample that covers consumption over several months. Each centimeter of hair length represents one month.

Covers several months with a single sample
Fewer appointments needed than urine screening
Costs vary depending on the lab and hair length

How long must abstinence be verified?

6
months

For alcohol (first offense, lower BAC) and cannabis

12
months

For higher BAC, repeat offenses, hard drugs

15
months

For severe dependency or multiple relapses

Our tip: Start your abstinence verification as early as possible. Every month you wait delays getting your license back.
